Opened in 1971, Jurong Bird Park is the largest bird park in the world, offering a 20.2-hectare hillside haven for 8,000 birds representing 600 species. Its Heliconia Repository, with 108 heliconia species and cultivars in its collection, is one of the largest in the region. With key attractions such as the Bird Discovery Centre, African Waterfall Aviary, Lory Loft Aviary, Southeast Asian Birds Aviary and the award-winning African Wetlands, the Bird Park attracted close to 900,000 visitors in 2009.
Having visited the bird park, go to another world renowned attraction -- the Singapore Sentosa Island.
Singapore’s first integrated resort Sentosa -- Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) -- is expected to be opened soon on the island. The 49-hectare mega resort is expected to receive its first visitors at its soft opening in early 2010. In the resorts include a casino, four hotels, the Universal Studios Singapore® family theme park, and Asia’s largest Grand Ballrooms. It also offers a wide range of entertainment and shows, as well as celebrity chef restaurants, brand-name boutiques and a half-kilometer long shopping and dining Strip named FestiveWalk.
In addition to RWS, Sentosa is home to more than 240 attractions, restaurants, bars and retail outlets. Some of them we are going to touch on below.
To get to the Sentosa Island, go back to Boon Lay MRT Station (EW27). Take the train to the Outram MRT Station (EW16/NE3) interchange, and switch to North East Line to HarbourFront MRT Station (NE1). Above the station is VivoCity, one of the largest shopping malls in Singapore. You can have your lunch there, before traveling to the Sentosa Island.
Take Sentosa Express* or the cable cars from VivoCity to Sentosa. There are many attractions on the island, and it is difficult to pinpoint where you should start. The best thing is to research the tourist map first and design an itinerary that suit you best. Among the current attractions is the Underwater World. Get up close to the pink dolphins at the Dolphin Lagoon. You may also want to visit the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom, Sentosa 4D Magix, the Carlsberg Sky Tower -- Singapore tallest observatory tower, The Merlion and Images of Singapore.
At night, head back to mainland Singapore via the Sentosa Express or the cable cars. If you choose to, pop by St James Power Station where you can party all night at its trendy clubs and F&B outlets.
